Your doctor may order a contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) exam if you’re at high risk for breast cancer, have concerns on your screening mammogram or have dense breast tissue. A CESM exam takes just seven minutes and is like a regular mammogram, except an intravenous (IV) contrast dye is used. The dye collects in the blood vessels of abnormal tissues, enabling your Mercy breast radiologist to study those areas in more detail.

This advanced ultrasound technology detects small cancers in dense breast tissue that mammography may miss. It uses sound waves to create 3D pictures of the whole breast, allowing for more visibility.

The latest linear accelerators deliver radiation to cancerous tumors with pinpoint accuracy and in fewer sessions. Treatments that might take 10 minutes elsewhere can be completed in a few minutes.

If a woman detects breast cancer while it’s still half an inch or less in size, her chance of survival can be more than 90%. Tumors this size can’t be felt, so screening mammograms are vital. Project Early Detection provides breast health services for women who are uninsured and underinsured, including mammograms, diagnostic procedures, treatment referral and education.
