Instructions for OB Patients

When you think labor is occurring, call your doctor:

  • If your “labor pains” or contractions are regular at 5-6 minutes apart (or closer).  Unless told otherwise.
  • If your water breaks or bleeding occurs (other than a pink mucous discharge).
  • Ifyou are questioning the pains you are experiencing are truly contractionsand you are going into labor.
  • If this is occurring during the day, call your doctor’s office (see below for a list of phone numbers).
  • If this is occurring after normal business hours, over the weekend or on a holiday call through the exchange (see below for a list of phone numbers).

If you feel you should leave for the hospital before your doctor returns your call, tell the exchange to notify your doctor that you are on your way and to WHICH hospital you are going. Upon arrival at the hospital, go directly to the Maternity Welcome Center at the front of the hospital. From there someone will escort you to the Labor and Delivery Department.

When you are in the early stages of labor, do not eat a heavy meal. Please do not hesitate to call for medical advice if you are unsure of what to do.
