Alternative Pain Treatments

October 26, 2018

The pain you’re feeling isn’t all in your head, but doctors at Mercy in Springfield may be able to teach your brain to control it.

Using high-tech computer systems that enable doctors to map the brain and watch as it reacts to stimuli, they can see what helps each patient turn off or turn down the activity in the part of the brain that monitors pain. For some, it may be hearing a certain sound. Others may react to a specific type of meditation.

Psychologists at Mercy Clinic Pain Management – Surgery Center have used these techniques to successfully treat everything from chronic tinnitus (ringing in the ears) to migraines, fibromyalgia, severe back pain and even opioid withdrawal symptoms.

KOLR 10 News recently visited with a patient who has seen such a dramatic reduction in her tinnitus symptoms, she hardly notices the ringing sound at all anymore.
