Staffed by pediatricians and pediatric-trained nurses, renovated with a more child-friendly look and feel, and blessed by Father Bill Cardy, OFM, Mercy South Chaplain, the Mercy Kids ER at Mercy Hospital South is providing the expanded pediatric care the south St. Louis County community requested.
On Dec. 6, Father Cardy blessed the renovated Mercy Kids ER and blessed the hands of the co-workers who will be treating young patients in need of care. The Mercy Kids ER opened on Oct. 1, but it has been undergoing renovations over the last couple of months. The renovations include décor and activities designed to keep children as distracted and occupied as possible, which can lower their stress levels along with the stress levels of their parents.
In addition to pediatricians and pediatric-trained nurses, the Mercy Kids team includes Child Life Specialists who help kids overcome their fear, reduce their anxiety and better understand their treatment. The Mercy Kids ER also features respiratory therapists for patients with breathing issues, specialized equipment designed for children, its own waiting and triage space, six treatment rooms and imaging services.
The Mercy South Emergency Department provides care for children 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The Mercy Kids ER at Mercy Hospital South will be open every day, from 12 noon to 12 midnight on weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends. Any children arriving for treatment outside of the Mercy Kids ER hours will receive care from pediatric-trained providers in the regular emergency department, which includes a Level 2 Trauma Center.
