Mercy recently welcomed Oklahoma native Dr. Clay Reed to Mercy Clinic Oncology and Hematology – Coletta in Oklahoma City. Dr. Reed brings a passion for personalized and compassionate care to patients seeking cancer treatment.
“Caring for others has always been an intrinsic part of who I am,” said Dr. Reed. “After my medical training, I really wanted to bring the knowledge I’ve gained from across the country back to patients in my home state.”
Originally from Cherokee, Oklahoma, Dr. Reed received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, graduating first in his class with highest honors. He later completed an internal medicine residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
“Cancer is a disease that affects patients and their families on a deep level,” said Dr. Reed. “By specializing in this field, I have the opportunity to provide hope, comfort and support during one of the most challenging times in a person’s life. I am deeply grateful for the privilege to make a positive difference in the lives of my patients.”
In addition to medical school and residency training, Dr. Reed completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology with the National Cancer Institute within the National Institutes of Health, where he worked with patients at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Georgetown Hospital in Washington, D.C., and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
“One of the health care philosophies I’ve picked up during my training and career is to provide individualized and patient centered care,” Dr. Reed said. “I firmly believe in treating each patient as a unique individual with their own needs, preferences and goals. I try to create a collaborative environment where patients feel empowered to actively participate in their treatment decisions.”
Dr. Reed focused his research during fellowship on immunotherapy for solid tumors within the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Immuno-Oncology, advancing the field for this type of cancer treatment.
“I am constantly inspired by the resilience and strength of my patients as they navigate through an incredibly difficult time,” said Dr. Reed. “Witnessing their determination to fight and overcome fuels my own passion for providing the best care possible.”
In his free time, Dr. Reed enjoys watching the Oklahoma City Thunder and Sooner football teams. He also enjoys trying new foods and traveling with his wife and son.
