Mercy Clinic Primary Care – Towson Opens in Fort Smith

February 23, 2024

A new Mercy primary care location in Fort Smith is now open, replacing a facility destroyed by a tornado in 2019.

Mercy Clinic Primary Care – Towson is at 4620 Towson Ave., at the corner of Phoenix Avenue. Mercy leaders, along with officials from the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce, city of Fort Smith and others, were on hand Jan. 29 to celebrate Mercy Fort Smith’s expansion to Towson Avenue.

Mercy doctor's coat Mercy leaders and co-workers joined the Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce, Mayor George McGill and others to cut the ribbon on the new Mercy Clinic Primary Care - Towson Avenue.

Dr. Fareed Kannout, internal medicine specialist with Mercy, has moved his practice from Zero Street to the Towson Avenue clinic, with up to three additional providers expected to join at a later time.

“This is a very great moment for us and for the community of Fort Smith,” Dr. Kannout said. “We are very excited to be here. It’s been a journey – we had some rough times, bad days with the tornado, as you know. It was a bad time, but it’s turned out to be a good time because now we are moving this new clinic that is going to provide great care for our patients and the entire community.”

The clinic is about 6,200 square feet and provides primary care services such as wellness exams, flu shots and other vaccines, X-ray and lab services and more.

Steve Gebhart, vice president of primary care, presented the Mercy cross to practice manager Sebrina Shelton before Father Paul Fetsko, vice president of mission, blessed the new facility.

“This has been a long time coming for us,” Gebhart said. “We are excited that we are able to move forward now into this new space after the 2019 tornado. And with this clinic comes new growth, with additional providers joining us at this new location on Towson. This is going to be a very busy practice.”

Mercy Clinic Primary Care – Zero Street is now closed. Mercy has donated that building’s lease to the Good Samaritan Clinic in Fort Smith, which is expected to move into the facility later this year.

Fort Smith Mayor George McGill was on hand for the ribbon-cutting and noted that the new addition is just one part of the growth and expansion of Mercy’s services in the River Valley.

“I was looking at the word ‘Mercy’ on the front of this podium, and I think about the footprint you’ve created in our area,” McGill said. “I think about the economic driver you are for this area. I think about the thousands of people in our area who count on you daily to provide extraordinary health care. It means a lot.”

McGill went on to say, “When I talk about why Fort Smith, Mercy is at the top of the list. We can show them – not only talk about it, but show them – the investments that are being made in this region. It’s an amazing time for Fort Smith as we grow and expand, and Mercy is a big part of that. Thank you, Mercy, for believing in Fort Smith!”
