Mercy to Host Interview Events Tailored for Those With Disabilities

September 12, 2024

As part of a larger focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, Mercy will once again host a series of inclusive hiring events throughout October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Those with disabilities often encounter barriers to employment. Mercy’s all-inclusive interviewing events look like a traditional interview day, with additional accommodations provided for attendees. Mercy representatives will be available to interview candidates who are invited to show off what makes them a great Mercy fit, such as a slideshow or picture résumé.

“In the workplace, disability inclusion is not just a checkbox, but a commitment to recognizing and valuing the diverse talents and perspectives of individuals with disabilities,” said Marisa Hiatt, Mercy’s director of disability and experience. “For the third year at Mercy, these events help us celebrate the strength and innovation that comes from creating truly inclusive environments where everyone can thrive during National Disability Employment Awareness Month and throughout the year.”

Candidates are encouraged to register ahead of the event to secure their interview time, although walk-in candidates can participate if time allows. Mercy inclusive hiring events will be held on the following dates and locations:

·       St. Louis, Oct. 3

·       Fort Smith, Oct. 7

·       Springfield, Oct. 15

·       Oklahoma City, Oct. 22

In 2024, Newsweek named Mercy one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity. Mercy actively provides ongoing education for co-workers and leaders to promote inclusive hiring and inform them about interviewing and employment resources for disabled candidates.

Mercy recruitment specialists focus on the individual and where their passion and purpose meet, not necessarily where their disability may seem to fit. Mercy has also grown its programs through the assistance of its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Advisory Board (DEIB) and built relationships with state rehabilitation associations.

“At Mercy, we believe our diversity enhances the quality of our patient care and service,” said Ashley McCasland, Mercy’s DEIB relationship manager. “We’re committed to creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities, ensuring every talent and perspective is valued. National Disability Employment Awareness Month events help spotlight the diversity of Mercy’s career opportunities to an often underrepresented and diverse group of individuals in our communities.”

This year’s theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month is “Access to Good Jobs for All.” The awareness month dates to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
