If Mercy Springfield’s orthopedic program was being graded, it would have just earned an A+.
Healthgrades, the leading online tool patients use to research doctors and hospitals, released its 2025 Specialty Excellence Awards on Oct. 22. The annual awards recognize hospitals with outstanding clinical performance in 16 specialty care areas. Healthgrades simultaneously released its 2025 Outpatient Awards for outstanding achievements in outpatient care across orthopedic surgery, joint replacement and prostate care.
Mercy Hospital Springfield was named among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for joint replacement, orthopedic surgery and outpatient orthopedic surgery, but the real celebration came as Mercy Hospital Springfield was named No. 1 in Missouri for joint replacement and orthopedic surgery.
“Our No. 1 ranking reflects the dedication of our entire team – physicians, advanced practice providers, co-workers, administrators and volunteers – working together to deliver exceptional patient care,” said Peter Crites, regional service line chair for Mercy Springfield’s orthopedic program. “With a focus on sub-specialization and the expertise of fellowship-trained specialists, we’re committed to achieving outstanding outcomes and maintaining our center of excellence. If you need a shoulder surgery, your surgeon only performs surgeries on shoulders. This means each of our surgeons is truly the best at what they do, and they’ve spent years honing their craft.”
The recognition from Healthgrades comes as Mercy Springfield’s orthopedic program continues to see more patients. In fiscal year 2024, Mercy completed more than 11,000 orthopedic surgeries, a 7% increase over the previous fiscal year. Patients from more than 160 zip codes, student and professional athletes alike, seek orthopedic care from Mercy Springfield.
Mercy Springfield’s orthopedic and sports medicine program supports athletes at Missouri State University, Springfield Public Schools, Evangel, Greenwood, Springfield Catholic, Nixa and even the pros at the Springfield Cardinals. To provide that level of care, Mercy Springfield’s orthopedic team is made up of 18 surgeons, including a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and 33 advanced practice providers.
“I can’t say enough great things about this team,” said John Myers, president of Mercy Springfield Communities. “Our orthopedic program is arguably one of the busiest in the state, and we’re honored that our patients trust us with their care. Every single day, we do our very best to bring world-class care to the Ozarks, and earning this recognition from Healthgrades shows all of our hard work is paying off.”
