Mercy Hospital Springfield has once again earned an A grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog committed to health care transparency. Mercy’s A grade for fall 2024 is the hospital’s fourth consecutive A from Leapfrog.
Nationwide, only 30% of hospitals achieved an A grade from Leapfrog this fall. In Missouri, Mercy Hospital Springfield stands out as one of only 12 hospitals to receive this distinction and is the only hospital in Springfield to earn the designation.
“We shouldn’t just celebrate earning an A for patient safety, we should be incredibly proud,” said John Myers, president of Mercy Springfield Communities. “This is no small feat, and now we have earned a Leapfrog A four consecutive times. To get an A for patient safety, it takes every single member of our team performing at their best, so I want to congratulate all of our care givers from our patient transport team, environmental services and public safety to our doctors, nurses and chaplains. We couldn’t provide the best patient care in town without all of you. Thank you for your dedication to our patients and for being part of Mercy.”
Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, added, “Achieving an A hospital safety grade is a significant accomplishment for Mercy Hospital Springfield. It reflects enormous dedication to patients and their families, and the whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Mercy, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
The Leapfrog hospital Safety Grade is the nation’s only rating system focused exclusively on preventing medical errors, infections and injuries that lead to more than 500 patient deaths each day. Leapfrog assigns letter grades (A-F) to hospitals across the country based on more than 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them. The program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
