Mercy Hospital Jefferson has achieved one of the most difficult standards for patient safety and quality – Leapfrog Top Hospital status.
The Leapfrog Group designated Mercy Jefferson as a Top General Hospital, making it one of only 134 hospitals nationwide to be named a Top Hospital for 2024. This is the third time in four years Mercy Jefferson has been named a Top Hospital having previously earned the honor in 2022 and 2021. Mercy Jefferson also has earned a Leapfrog A grade in 13 of the last 16 grading periods.
“Safe, quality care isn’t limited to the big hospitals in big cities. Thanks to the amazing efforts of our co-workers, who put the patient first in all we do, we’re able to bring this high level of care to the people of Jefferson County here in our community,” said Dan Eckenfels, Mercy Jefferson president. “We’re honored to be able to provide that level of care here – and to be able to grow the services we’re providing at the same time.”
The Leapfrog Group also designated Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis County and Mercy Hospital Springfield in Springfield, Missouri, as Top Teaching Hospitals. Like Mercy Jefferson, this is the third Top Hospital award in four years for Mercy South, which also earned the distinction in 2022 and 2021. Mercy Springfield last earned Top Hospital designation in 2018.
“We know the importance of providing high-quality, safe care to our patients – and so does Leapfrog,” said Kat Nelson, Mercy chief quality officer. “They have a rigorous process for assessing the safety and quality of hospital care. Hitting the mark with this national, independent, third-party organization says a lot about what patients can expect when they come to Mercy for their health care.”
The Leapfrog Group considers almost 2,400 hospitals for this honor using such measures as infection rates, safe surgery practices, maternity care and capacity to prevent medication errors.
