Mercy Hospital South has achieved one of the most difficult standards for patient safety and quality – Leapfrog Top Hospital status.
The Leapfrog Group designated Mercy South as a Top Teaching Hospital, making it one of only 134 hospitals nationwide to be named a Top Hospital for 2024. This is the third time in four years Mercy South has been named a Top Hospital having previously earned the honor in 2022 and 2021. Mercy South also holds Leapfrog straight A status by earning an A grade for seven consecutive grading periods dating back to 2021.
“It takes extraordinary effort and focus by our co-workers to be a Top Hospital. To earn that recognition three out of four years is something our co-workers and our entire community should take pride in,” said Sean Hogan, Mercy South president. “Very few places in this country have this level of safe, quality care in their own backyard like we do here.”
The Leapfrog Group also designated Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City as a Top General Hospital and Mercy Hospital Springfield in Springfield, Missouri, as a Top Teaching Hospital. Like Mercy South, this is the third Top Hospital award in four years for Mercy Jefferson, which also earned the distinction in 2022 and 2021. Mercy Springfield last earned Top Hospital designation in 2018.
“We know the importance of providing high-quality, safe care to our patients – and so does Leapfrog,” said Kat Nelson, Mercy chief quality officer. “They have a rigorous process for assessing the safety and quality of hospital care. Hitting the mark with this national, independent, third-party organization says a lot about what patients can expect when they come to Mercy for their health care.”
The Leapfrog Group considers almost 2,400 hospitals for this honor using such measures as infection rates, safe surgery practices, maternity care and capacity to prevent medication errors.
