Mercy Southeast Welcomes New Orthopedic Surgeon

March 20, 2025

Patients in Southeast Missouri now have expanded access close to home for surgical treatment of orthopedic issues with the addition of orthopedic surgeon Charles Roberson, MD, at Mercy Southeast.

Dr. Roberson, an orthopedic surgeon trained in sports medicine, joined Mercy Clinic Orthopedics and Sports Medicine – 650 S. Mount Auburn in Cape Girardeau alongside a talented team of physicians and nurse practitioners.

Orthopedic surgeons offer specialized care to help patients regain mobility and their previous level of physical activity, including:

“When most people think of sports medicine, they think it primarily involves the treatment of athletes,” said Dr. Roberson, who practices general orthopedics with an emphasis on sports medicine. “While that is an important component of sports medicine, it's only a part of the picture. I define a person’s ‘sport’ as activities they enjoy as well as activities that are an important part of and bring fulfillment to their life. Their sport could be athletic participation at the little league, high school, college or professional level. Their sport could be participation in PE class at school or playing with friends. Their sport could be their job. Their sport could be spending time with children or grandchildren or whatever recreational activities they enjoy. My goal is to get my patients back to their sport, no matter what it is, and I’m thankful they trust me to help them get back to their sport, whatever it may be.”

Hailing from Athens, Georgia, Dr. Roberson earned his undergraduate degree at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He then completed medical school at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Roberson completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and his fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Roberson will also provide high-quality care to and work with student-athletes and performers at Southeast Missouri State University as part of Mercy Southeast’s collaboration with the university.

“The exciting opportunity to work with athletes at SEMO and offer orthopedic and sports medicine care to the people of Cape Girardeau and the surrounding areas is what drew me to this area,” Dr. Roberson said.

Dr. Roberson is married to Dr. Kendra Roberson. They have two children, Dr. Charles Malcom Roberson and William Roberson, and four grandchildren. Dr. Roberson enjoys martial arts, weight-lifting, fishing and collecting comic books. The Robersons hope to add dogs to their family soon.
