Mercy Ada’s Neonatal ICU telemedicine program allows patients and their newborns to stay close to home while receiving the most advanced care for premature or critically ill babies. When it comes to safe sleep for your newborn, remember to follow the ABCs:

  • Alone – your baby should sleep alone, without other objects, caregivers or siblings
  • Back – your baby should sleep on their back
  • Crib – your baby should sleep in their own sleeping space, such as a crib or a bassinet

Here are some other good safe sleep rules to keep in mind with a new baby:

  • Until their first birthday, place your baby on their back to sleep, even for naps
  • Use a firm sleep surface covered by a fitted sheet
  • For at least the first six months, keep your baby's sleep area in your bedroom
  • Don't sleep with your baby in the same bed (co-bedding)
  • If your baby falls asleep in a car seat, stroller or other carrier, move them to a firm sleep surface, such as a crib or bassinet
  • Never put your baby to sleep on a couch, sofa or armchair
  • Keep soft objects such as pillows, blankets, toys and bumpers out of your baby’s sleep area
  • If you give your baby a pacifier, use one without a string to decrease their risk of choking or strangling
  • Breastfeed your baby to lower their risk of sudden infant death syndrome
