Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) physicians at Mercy's Maternal and Fetal Medicine Clinic at 10004 Kennerly Road in St. Louis, are high-risk obstetricians, also known as perinatologists. They are trained in obstetrics and gynecology and have an in-depth understanding of pregnancy complications and treatments.
Mercy Clinic MFM specialists work in collaboration with obstetricians to provide care for high-risk women through consultation, co-management of a woman's pregnancy, total care (including prenatal care and delivery) and direction of care before (pre-conception), during and after pregnancy. A pregnant woman may be referred to an MFM specialist for a variety of reasons. Many women are referred for prenatal testing to evaluate fetal growth and other characteristics. Others may have a medical condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, or develop complications that require close monitoring and care.
The MFM Diabetes in Pregnancy Program at Mercy includes certified diabetes educators (CDE) and perinatal nurses who have special training in diabetes management and education in pregnancy. Our program focus is caring for women preconception and during pregnancy with type 1 diabetes, including insulin pump therapy, type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes. We also provide postpartum follow-up and coordination with OB/GYN, endocrinology and primary care physicians.
Our diabetes in pregnancy classes are taught by a certified diabetic educator and offered to all women with gestational diabetes or any other diabetic patient in need of education.
