Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic

Our office also has an adult cystic fibrosis clinic. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic mutation disorder that causes mucus in the body to build up and affect many of the body’s organs, especially the lungs and pancreas. Cystic fibrosis involves the respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems. Symptoms for the disorder can range from mild to severe. Some of the more prevalent symptoms are:

  • Thick, sticky mucus
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Recurrent lung (respiratory) infections with resistant organisms
  • Recurrent sinus infections
  • Delayed or poor growth
  • Enlargement or rounding of the fingers or toes

Mercy offers extensive care for this disease. In many ways, the care you receive will be similar to what you are accustomed to regular check-ups, occasional lab work and hospitalization if necessary. You many begin to experience new symptoms as you grow older. The treatment for cystic fibrosis varies based on the individual. This personalized treatment plan may include airway clearance, medications and nutritional support. Patients receive care from a multidisciplinary team of experts.

Robotic-Assisted Lung Surgery in Northwest Arkansas

When surgery is needed for lung conditions, robotic-assisted surgery may be an option to consider. If your doctor recommends surgery and you're eligible, the trained team at Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas will perform surgery with the assistance of robotic technology.

This means that instead of making one large incision through your chest wall, your surgeon will make a few small incisions between your ribs. Robotic-assisted surgery of the chest cavity offers potential benefits over traditional surgical approaches, including:

  • Fewer complications
  • Less pain
  • Less scar tissue
  • Reduced blood loss and need for transfusions
  • Reduced muscle and tissue damage
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Faster return to normal activities
