Gastroparesis, or delayed gastric emptying, is a condition that affects the nerves and muscles in your stomach. Usually, strong muscle contractions move food from your stomach into your small intestine. When gastroparesis occurs, these muscles work slowly or weakly, preventing your stomach from emptying. Gastroparesis causes indigestion, bloating, pain, nausea and other symptoms.
Gastroparesis can be treated with diet changes, medication, a feeding tube or electrical stimulation therapy. Diet changes may include eating smaller meals, drinking more liquids and avoiding fatty or high-fiber foods. Prescription medications for treating gastroparesis include:
If symptoms are severe and don’t respond to other treatments, nutrition can be delivered directly to the stomach through a feeding tube, which is called enteral nutrition. Gastric electrical stimulation, a surgical treatment, is also available.
Enterra® Therapy is available at Mercy Clinic Surgery in Ardmore. A small device about the size of a pocket watch is surgically implanted in the abdomen. This minimally invasive procedure takes only one to two hours and is reversible. Enterra Therapy sends mild electrical pulses that stimulate stomach nerves and muscles. This type of therapy is called gastric electrical stimulation (GES). If you live with severe gastroparesis that doesn’t respond to other treatments, GES may be an option for you.
