Springfield Diabetes Education & Prevention

Unhealthy habits can develop over the years, and replacing them with healthy ones doesn’t happen overnight. But Mercy can help reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Mercy’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) in Springfield, MO, uses a CDC-approved curriculum. Our DPP is offered within a small-group setting to give those at risk for type 2 diabetes the tools, skills and mutual support to adopt sustainable, healthy lifestyle choices and achieve weight loss.

What is the Diabetes Prevention Program?

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a lifestyle change program in Springfield, MO, led by a CDC-trained lifestyle coach to help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet goals (weekly, monthly, and long-term), and keep you motivated. You will meet with a group of 8-15 people in a small group setting where you will share ideas, celebrate successes and work to overcome obstacles. Our diabetes prevention and education program is tailored to meet the group's needs.

DPP Curriculum

There will be a total of 26 sessions:

  • Sessions will meet weekly for the first 16 weeks
  • Then every other week for the next 2 months (4 sessions)
  • Finally, there will be one session per month for the last 6 months

The diabetes program sessions will cover the following:

  • Healthy eating without giving up foods you love
  • Adding physical activity to your life
  • Dealing with stress
  • Behavior change (coping with challenges and getting back on track),
  • Setting goals, staying motivated & overcoming barriers

Each DPP session will build on the previous one. You will be asked to track your food and physical activity each week. Each session will start with a weigh-in, turning in food and physical activity logs, and a review of the previous week.

DPP Goals

There are two goals for the Diabetes Prevention Program:

  • 5% - 7% weight loss
  • 150 minutes of physical activity per week
