How Does Radiation Oncology Work?

Radiation therapy kills cancer cells using pinpoint doses of high-energy radiation. Having the latest equipment and the expertise to properly target those cells is vital to the success of the treatment.

Advanced Radiotherapy for Effective Treatment

Our Varian TrueBeam radiotherapy system provides more accurate imaging, faster treatments and the flexibility to treat a broad range of cancer cases. Along with our PET/CT diagnostic simulator, this high-precision technology enables us to offer a variety of very effective treatments:

  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treats patients with prostate, head and neck, brain and many other cancers by focusing beams onto carefully targeted tumor cells without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) uses high-resolution x-rays to pinpoint tumors seconds before treatment, automatically positioning the patient with millimeter accuracy and tracking patient movement throughout the procedure.
  • Respiratory gating is used to ensure that lung tumors do not move out of the radiation field during breathing and to protect the heart during left-sided breast cancer treatment.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy are used to treat certain tumors with only one to five treatment sessions.
  • PET and CT scanners are used for treatment planning on site, without an extra visit to the hospital.
  • Prostate brachytherapy destroys cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue nearby.
  • Personalized patient education increases patient confidence and peace-of-mind while support programs help with nutrition and appearance.
  • Easy access with dedicated parking makes visits convenient.

While our team highly values the latest technology, we feel it's the connection we have with our patients that makes the real difference in successful cancer treatments. Our center offers education and support to give you confidence and peace throughout your cancer journey. Choose an experienced team you feel comfortable trusting with your cancer care. We're right here in Pittsburg and we're ready to help.
