We appreciate your interest in volunteering at Mercy Hospital St. Louis and your willingness to give back to your community. Volunteering at our St. Louis hospital provides a wonderful service to our patients, families and community. We continually seek dedicated and passionate volunteers who are willing to give of their time and talents to make Mercy the best it can be.

Volunteering at Mercy Hospital is a unique and rewarding opportunity. In addition to the satisfaction of making a difference, volunteers are invited to an appreciation luncheon and brunch each year and have the same discounts as Mercy co-workers. Mercy volunteers are also given a $5 meal card each day to use in the cafeteria, smoothie bar or coffee shop.

Mercy Volunteer Opportunities in St. Louis

As a volunteer, you’ll be part of a group of compassionate individuals committed to carrying on the traditions of Mercy Hospital. Your support will help our health care professionals provide excellent service to our patients. Volunteer opportunities include everything from greeting visitors, cuddling a little one in the NICU, praying with patients, assisting our health care team on patient care units or volunteering in the hospital gift shop. Volunteers are present in almost every area of the hospital, including:

  • Emergency department
  • ICU waiting rooms
  • Information desks
  • Children's hospital
  • NICU
  • Burn unit
  • Heart and vascular hospital
  • David C. Pratt Cancer Center
  • Gift shop

Hospitality Volunteer Opportunities

Mercy Hospital St. Louis is recruiting hospitality volunteers to warmly welcome and compassionately assist our patients, visitors, and families. These volunteers support the Mercy St. Louis community through service in the heart hospital, main hospital, intensive care waiting room and doctor’s buildings. The hospitality volunteer role may include:

  • Greeting and welcoming patients, families and visitors arriving at Mercy Hospital
  • Looking up patient room numbers using the computer
  • Looking up physician office locations using a directory or computer
  • Assisting the families of ICU patients
  • Providing directions around Mercy Hospital
  • Escorting a patient or visitor in a wheelchair to their destination
  • Delivering mail, books, newspapers or other comfort items to patients

Hospitality volunteers are scheduled for a four-hour shift, during the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities at Mercy Hospital, please call 314-251-6180. 

Pastoral Care Volunteer Opportunities

Mercy’s pastoral services in St. Louis offer various volunteer ministry opportunities to individuals who are active with local denominations or faith groups. If you wish to join the pastoral services team in a volunteer capacity, get started by filling out our volunteer interest form.

Pastoral Care Volunteer Process

When accepted, you will attend the general orientation session that the hospital requires of all volunteers. You will then be scheduled to interview in the pastoral services department. If we have a pastoral volunteer position that is a good fit for you, we will orient you to pastoral services and, depending on your previous experience and your volunteer role, provide you specialized training regarding the various aspects of supporting our patients. You will also receive ongoing supervision and various opportunities for continuing education and growth in the caring ministries.
