An echocardiogram, also known as an echo test or heart ultrasound, is a simple and painless procedure that uses sound waves to take pictures of your heart. It can evaluate the structures of the heart as well as the direction of blood flow inside of it.

Echocardiograms are used to find:

  • Causes of unexplained chest pain, chest pressure or shortness of breath
  • Signs of diseases that affect the walls and chambers of the heart
  • How well your heart is pumping blood
  • How well your heart valves are working

Your Mercy doctor might order this test if you’ve had a heart attack, heart murmur, unexplained chest pains, rheumatic fever or a congenital heart defect.
