Treatment Options

Some injuries heal on their own after plenty of rest. Other more serious injuries may need complete immobilization or even surgery. Your treatment plan will depend on several factors including your age, lifestyle and the type and severity of your injury. Treatment for foot and ankle injuries may include:

  • Surgery, including foot and ankle reconstruction, to repair tendons or reposition and stabilize broken bones
  • Medication to reduce pain and swelling
  • Orthotics (shoe inserts) to redistribute your weight and take the pressure off the injured part of your foot or ankle
  • Orthopedic rehabilitation to strengthen and stretch your muscles and tendons.
  • A brace or walking boot to support your injury while it heals
  • Crutches or a cane to help you walk without putting weight on your injured ankle or foot
  • A cast or splint to hold a broken bone in place until it heals
  • Rest, ice, compression and elevation, also known as RICE

No matter how badly you’re hurt, you can rest assured you’re in capable hands at Mercy. We’ll closely monitor your injury until it’s healed, and help you carefully resume your normal activities.
