Intragastric Balloon

Treatment

If you struggle with obesity, new tools are now available to help you manage your weight without surgery. These FDA-approved treatments, called intragastric balloons, use temporary implants along with lifestyle changes to deliver life-changing results.

There are no incisions, and following the procedure, you go home the same day and resume normal activities within 24 hours.

Research has shown that patients using an intragastric balloon lost two to three times more weight than dieting alone.

Two-Part Weight Loss Program

Mercy specialists can help you lose weight and regain your life using a comprehensive, two-part program.

Part one begins with an in-depth consultation and health history. Here we will determine if you are a good candidate for an implant and then develop a personalized plan. You may be eligible for an intragastric balloon if you meet several criteria, including:

  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 30 and 40.
  • You are willing and able to make necessary dietary and lifestyle changes.

If an intragastric balloon makes sense for you, your doctor will recommend a product like ORBERA® or a similar implant.

During part two, the implant procedure will be performed during a separate outpatient visit. The balloon will be inserted using a tube that passes through your mouth and into the stomach. The balloon takes up space in your stomach to make you feel full and encourage portion control. It will remain in your stomach for about six months.

Following the procedure, your Mercy team will guide you through a customized diet and exercise program. We help you retrain your appetite, adopt new nutritional habits, and establish an exercise routine that is essential to your long-term success.

What to Expect From an Intragastric Balloon Procedure

Your Mercy care team will make sure you understand what to expect before, during and after your procedure. This includes understanding potential risks and complications. You will also learn about how the balloon will be removed at the end of your treatment period.

At Mercy, we understand that this is a big step on your journey towards better health. You can take comfort in knowing Mercy is by your side with the highest quality care and the support and encouragement you need – to meet your weight-loss goal and improve your quality of life.
