Occupational Therapy

Treatment

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a type of physical rehabilitation. Every day, most of us brush our teeth, prepare food and work around the house with ease, and never give it a second thought. However, for someone who has suffered a debilitating injury, disease or disability, performing these ordinary activities can become a monumental challenge. Mercy occupational therapists help patients of all ages develop and maintain necessary life and work skills.

Types of Occupational Therapy

Mercy occupational therapists can teach you ways to overcome physical limitations and make tasks more manageable. Depending on your unique condition or medical issue, occupational therapy sessions at Mercy may involve a wide range of different therapies and OT treatments, including:

  • Retraining and therapeutic intervention to improve basic daily living activities, such as dressing, bathing and feeding
  • Assessment and improvement of cognitive abilities in both home and work environments
  • Visual perception skills
  • Assistive devices to increase independence
  • Upper extremity strengthening and coordination
  • Orthotic fabrication to assist with the function of the upper extremity/hand
  • Wheelchair evaluations
  • Driving evaluations including a clinical assessment and on-the-road driving training program

As part of your care and learning, we work with your family members and friends to encourage their participation in your treatment on your road to recovery.

Conditions Treated

Our occupational therapy services include treatment for people:

  • With mental or physical impairments
  • Who have experienced sudden, serious health conditions such as a stroke, heart attack, brain injury or amputation
  • With chronic conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Who are living with learning disabilities or developmental delays
  • Recovering and returning to work after an injury

We all want – and deserve – to live independent, productive and satisfying lives. Our goal is to help you gain the skills and ability you need to handle daily activities with ease – so you can focus your attention on all the other things that make life fulfilling.
