What is the Well-Woman Exam?
Even if you look and feel healthy, it’s important to have a well-woman exam every year. This comprehensive exam allows you and your doctor to review your health concerns and screen for potential problems. It’s also a great way to build a relationship with your physician and learn how to prevent illness and promote optimal health.
At Mercy, we take a comprehensive and caring approach to your health and well-being. We look closely at your medical history and provide the tests and screenings you need for peace of mind. Typically, a well-woman exam involves:
- A pelvic exam
- Breast exam and breast cancer screening
- Screening for cervical cancer (pap smear)
- Routine blood work
- Pre-conception counseling
- Screening for osteoporosis
In the event you require follow-up care, we'll refer you to the right specialists and help coordinate your care, so you can feel and look healthy for years to come.
Who Needs a Well Woman Exam?
If you haven’t had a well-woman exam in the past year, now is the time to schedule one. Mercy recommends annual well-women exams if you identify with any of the following:
- Are 18 years or older
- Are sexually active
- Have concerns about your period or menopause
- Are considering becoming pregnant
If you are experiencing any of the following signs or symptoms, please call your doctor immediately.
- Any lumps or changes in your breasts
- Vaginal pain, burning, itching or symptoms of a sexually transmitted disease
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
