Mercy St. Louis Only Leapfrog Top Hospital in Missouri

December 8, 2020

ST. LOUIS – The Leapfrog Group today released its annual list of Top Hospitals in the nation and Mercy Hospital St. Louis was one of three Mercy hospitals to receive the prestigious honor - and the only hospital in Missouri. Mercy Hospital St. Louis was recognized as a top large teaching hospital, Mercy Hospital Ada was recognized among the top rural hospitals and Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas was recognized as a top teaching small hospital.

The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers, sets some of the toughest standards of health care safety and quality. More than 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award and only 105 were selected.

“While this is the fourth time Mercy Hospital St. Louis has made the list, it is especially incredible today.” said Stephen Mackin, executive vice president, Mercy and president, Mercy St. Louis Community. This recognition comes at a time when healthcare faces tremendous change, and our Mercy communities have chosen the paths of determination, generosity and unwavering service. Our co-workers persevered and continued to make this top-tier care possible, distinguishing what Mercy care means.”

Hospitals are awarded based on the quality of care they provide for their patients. The methodology includes analysis of infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care and the hospital’s record of preventing medication errors. Hospitals must rank highest among their peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey to earn the recognition.

“Being recognized as a Top Hospital is an extraordinary feat and we are honored to recognize three Mercy hospitals this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Despite the extraordinary pressure and strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mercy Hospital Ada, Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas and Mercy Hospital St. Louis have demonstrated an unwavering dedication to patients in the communities they serve. We congratulate the boards, staff and clinicians whose efforts made this honor possible.”
