Mercy Hospital Lebanon just earned an A grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog committed to health care transparency. Mercy’s A grade for fall 2024 is the hospital’s first A from Leapfrog since 2022. Since then, Mercy Lebanon has seen approximately a 25% increase in patient volumes, and as patient demand increased, the team in Lebanon focused heavily on patient safety to regain its Leapfrog A grade.
“Our team has worked tirelessly over the last two years to ensure we’re providing the best patient care to this community,” said Jason Wilson, hospital administrator at Mercy Hospital Lebanon. “We’ve improved in a number of areas reviewed by Leapfrog, and that takes an effort by our entire team. One example of an area where we’ve seen those efforts pay off is patient falls. For this last review period, we had zero patient falls with trauma, which is so impressive when you consider how many patients we’re caring for every single day. Healthcare is not easy, but when you have a team that’s focused on a mission of providing the best patient care to every single patient every single day, you can hit even the highest set goal.”
Nationwide, only 30% of hospitals achieved an A grade from Leapfrog this fall. In Missouri, Mercy Hospital Lebanon stands out as one of only 12 hospitals to receive this distinction. It’s neighboring hospital, Mercy Hospital Springfield also earned an A grade.
Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, added, “Achieving an A hospital safety grade is a significant accomplishment for Mercy Hospital Lebanon. It reflects enormous dedication to patients and their families, and the whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Mercy, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the nation’s only rating system focused exclusively on preventing medical errors, infections and injuries that lead to more than 500 patient deaths each day. Leapfrog assigns letter grades (A-F) to hospitals across the country based on more than 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them. The program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
